Ripken Game 2: 919 Nationals 6, Evoshield Seminoles 6

The Nationals picked up a rare tie late Saturday night in the second game of pool play in Myrtle Beach at the Ripken Experience, battling back to earn a 6-6 tie with the Evoshield Seminoles.

The Seminoles include five players from the Glen Allen team that ended West Raleigh Blue's summer, and after two innings this game looked very much like that one. The Seminoles scored three times in the first and in the second on the way to building a 6-2 lead. But 919 tallied once in the third, then pushed across three game-tying runs in the fourth while Banks was pitching shutout relief (he retired the last five batters in a row). As Coach Kevin told the team afterward, "I'm very proud of the way you fought back."

At that point, with the clock ticking past 10 p.m. and each side with the heart of their order due up in the fifth, the umpires somewhat unexpectedly decided the time limit had elapsed. The two teams will get to decide the ultimate winner on Sunday afternoon, as they will meet again at 12:30 in single elimination bracket play, with the winner moving on to the championship game.

Pitching Performances
Andrew threw one and two-thirds innings to start the game.

Banks finished it up with two and a third innings of great relief, including a 1-2-3 fourth.

Dugout wisdom
Wondering why the offense suddenly came to life in the fourth inning? It's because the dugout resurrected the Rally Snipers, which have been used with great success since the summer. Not sure who started the Rally Snipers, but it was a good move.

  • It didn't result in an out, but Elias made a very good and aggressive play in center in the second, as he charged on a single to center and very nearly forced the runner out going from first to second with a hard throw to second.
  • Brady made a nice scoop on a low throw leading off the third inning to retire the leadoff man.
  • Andrew made a terrific running catch in right-center for the second out in the third.
  • Brady made a sprawling catch in right for the first out of the fourth.
